π½π NY, NJ, CT, MD Petition SCOTUS: Restore SALT Deduction For Federal Tax Returns
Congressional delegations from high tax states have been grinding the issue of lifting the state and local tax (SALT) cap, but have been unsuccessful in efforts to include the provision in recent legislation. You can read a previous WANJ commentary on the topic here. A 2017 law set the maximum SALT deduction on federal income tax returns at $10K.
While progressive, Democrat leadership in these states continue to denigrate human rights by imposing liberty-strangling mandates on their People, their Attorneys General have banded together championing states' rights to tax, invest and spend in support of policy objectives that are increasingly unpopular with the same People.
"The states reiterated those arguments in their Monday petition for high court review, insisting that Congress enacted the cap in order create state revenue harms that would coerce them into lowering their tax rates and public investments. βAs Congress itself recognized for over 150 years, a deduction for all or nearly all state and local income and property taxes is necessary to avoid federal intrusion on state sovereign taxing authority and policies,β the states wrote."1
